In the age of hyper-connectivity, social media trends such as the recent Ghibli AI art phenomenon have become a means for individuals to engage in collective digital experiences. However, the prime reason for maximum people to engage in such trends is to develop their Social Currency and reduce their FOMO.
However, a critical question arises: Is participating in these trends an actual measure of social value, or is it merely a transient way to accrue "fake" Social Currency ? This is because an inverse relationship is seen: in those fostering digital social currency and they (Not all) themselves being socially ignorant personalities in real life.
In contrast, real social currency stems from meaningful engagement with society— starting with the family itself and then expanding on towards being more empathetic and lending our ears to the people/institution in need.
The data by varied prominent institutions like Neuropsychological Dept of MIT, Behavioural Economics editorials by Mckinsey and other sociologists, all direct towards this ailment and its disastrous impact. "If you are the one who's more concerned in appreciating your social currency JUST on the social media, you are already into the TRAP". That's what the "gist statement" by the above reports-backed by the empirical data.
If we continue this trajectory - i.e we being too immersive with the tools of humankind ( like AI,VR,AR) rather than with the essence of humankind (empathy, being compassionate rather), we are bound to get a robotic end to ourselves ( i.e hallucination or what we call as मृगतृष्णा - deer's desert thirst and its eventual death )
Virality per se isn't bad, platforms reward engagement, making virality a goal in itself. That's the problem. Though it can be a very potent tool to achieve all the "good", desired in a society - like transparency in governance, wide participation and immediate feedback towards a policy. Hence, you should be someone whose social currency value soars high on the streets rather than on screens.
Social media trends will always evolve, and participation in them is not inherently negative. However, true social currency lies not in chasing virality but in being an active, contributing meaningfully in relationships, society and as a citizen overall. As India progresses towards Viksit Bharat 2047, it is imperative to channel digital engagement into real-world action—bridging the gap between online validation and offline impact.
