Social Glorification of Money :

The Title of my topic comprises of three fundamental or you can say un-ornamented words viz- ‘Social’, ‘Glorification’ and ‘Money’. And it’s conventionally established that these three possessions are inevitable requirements and everyone wishes to surround themselves with these three auras in their life. But, the main problem arises when these three words are used in single context i.e. “Glorification of money at societal level”. In our society, definition of having money has been reversed to a newer one. MONEY may be one’s economic equivalence of his/her worth but it should not be taken other way round.

I would like to focus on some instances from our society that proves that we ourselves are the whole and sole responsible for this mindset:

1. Money creates the illusion that a child may be brighter than another because of a private school education. With these inaccurate assumptions, the rich become more educated and, therefore, have the opportunities to become wealthier. Likewise, the poor stay uneducated and see little hope to move up in the class system. When a group of people are confined to one level of the class system and see no honest way out of their situation, corrupt ideas begin to form.

2. The main corner where this type of social glorification in the name of money is stressed a lot is in the Dowry system. Some people from us only inculcate or penned within us, this evil practice and the root of these thoughts are sowed by none other than our elders. In today’s scenario also, in many rural and urban areas, people find themselves dignified and overwhelmed (instead of going against it) if their son gets a heavy Dowry amount. And, it becomes a matter of prestige and discussions along with a sip of tea at evenings.

3. The exchange of wealth for power can be seen in the political advertising campaigns of today. Excessive spending is put into candidates’ political campaigns to enhance their chances of winning the ballot. Commercials are filmed, campaign trails are mapped, expenses are paid; over time, this practice becomes an absolute necessity to even be in contention for power. When a candidate is focused on the money spent winning the election, and not their political talent, why would they be reliable in office? Political spending must be regulated in order to maintain government integrity. The reason for this is nothing except greediness and misuse of one’s possession and power which originates right from our society who glorifies these activities at a smaller level and at a latter stage, they themselves becomes a sufferer of the problem.

4. There are many more instances in our societies that glorify the possession of having money instead looking it from some rational angle. These are the reasons why our politicians, big industrialists and bureaucrats becomes corrupt because they themselves have surpassed or being feed through this mindset.

Today, money is the ultimate goal in society; it is viewed as the “key to success.” And I agree to that- Money is a very potent weapon to satisfy our needs in all respects ,While money can be used in many instances for good(if utilised effectively and carries a rationale meaning, instead of glorifying it), BUT more often times a vicious, damaging cycle is the outcome. Money turns into power, which becomes greed for more, and this greed inevitably becomes corruption.

This is not a problem in India but it’s a global recursive predicament. So, we can come out of this ugly circle only if we start valuing person’s values instead of valuing his/her pocket. Corruption will continue to grow and intensify only if these actions are not taken. Thus, Gratitude will always reverse greed and the thought that a simplistic lifestyle can be as fulfilling as any other should be considered.
